Creating a Power of Attorney
1:30

Have you ever thought about creating a power of attorney? Many don't think about this until they encounter a major challenge.

However, waiting until it's urgently needed poses a real problem because the document must be created of your own free will and when you're mentally capable

The purpose of a power of attorney is to designate someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf when you're unable to do so yourself. Therefore, it's crucial not to wait until it becomes necessary to create one.

The good news is that you can tailor the power of attorney to be all-inclusive or limited. Regardless, you get to decide who you trust to make decisions for you. You also get to decide when their authority starts and ends.

If you do not create a power of attorney and a situation arises where decisions must be made on your behalf, the court may appoint someone, potentially someone you may not know or want.

Your loved ones could file for adult guardianship, but this can be a lengthy process and why put your loved ones through that stress at a difficult time?

I have seen many situations where having a power of attorney document on file was extremely helpful in reducing stress at an extremely stressful time. I have also seen real problems for families without a power of attorney.

If you haven't already, I recommend consulting with an attorney today. It's better to take care of it now than to face the consequences of not having one later on.
